Hasmonean expansion imposes new conditions

Date: Late second century BC · John Hyrcanus
Josephus reports that John Hyrcanus conquers Idumean towns and makes continued residence conditional on circumcision and observance of Jewish laws. Expansion brings new people under Hasmonean authority.
This account exposes coercion within a dynasty celebrated for resisting coercion. The experience of conquered communities must remain visible. A broad reign frame is used rather than turning a debated campaign date into a precise timeline point.

For the class
How does a story of resistance change when the former resisters gain power over others?
Interpretation and reuse
Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
