Date: c. 1445–1407 BC · 38 years from Kadesh to the Zered crossing. Dated from 1 Kings 6:1, which places the Exodus 480 years before Solomon began the temple (c. 966 BC). Many scholars instead date the Exodus to about 1260 BC.

The fighting generation that refused to enter the land passes away during the wilderness years. Numbers names Joshua and Caleb as exceptions. Deuteronomy recalls both judgment and God’s continuing provision.

Deuteronomy 2:14 gives 38 years from departure from Kadesh to crossing the Zered. Deuteronomy 8 speaks of the broader forty-year journey. Numbers 33 lists camps but does not date each one within that interval.

Primary Scripture

Numbers 14:26–35 (BSB)

14:26 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

14:27 “How long will this wicked congregation grumble against Me? I have heard the complaints that the Israelites are making against Me.

14:28 So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say.

14:29 Your bodies will fall in this wilderness—all who were numbered in the census, everyone twenty years of age or older—because you have grumbled against Me.

14:30 Surely none of you will enter the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

14:31 But I will bring your children, whom you said would become plunder, into the land you have rejected—and they will enjoy it.

14:32 As for you, however, your bodies will fall in this wilderness.

14:33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.

14:34 In keeping with the forty days you spied out the land, you shall bear your guilt forty years—a year for each day—and you will experience My alienation.

14:35 I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this entire wicked congregation, which has conspired against Me. They will meet their end in the wilderness, and there they will die.”

Deuteronomy 2:14–16 (BSB)

2:14 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.

2:15 Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp, until they had all perished.

2:16 Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
