Date: After Ehud in the narrative · Also recalled in Deborah’s song
One verse records that Shamgar son of Anath strikes down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad and saves Israel. Deborah’s song also remembers his days as a time when travelers avoided the main roads.
The book gives neither a length of rule nor a hometown for Shamgar. Judges 3 places his notice after Ehud, while the song associates his days with Jael; those details do not support a separate, precisely dated national reign.
Primary Scripture
3:31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.
5:6 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways.
5:7 Life in the villages ceased; it ended in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel.
5:8 When they chose new gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or spear was found among forty thousand in Israel.
Related Scripture
Deborah’s song supplies the other mention of Shamgar and describes the insecurity of those days.

Interpretation and reuse
Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event.
