The woman, child and dragon

Date: Revelation 12 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.
John sees a woman clothed with the sun and a dragon waiting to devour her child. The child destined to rule the nations is taken to God’s throne, and the woman is sustained in the wilderness.
The passage calls these heavenly signs and compresses the child’s birth and enthronement into a few verses. The ruling child evokes Psalm 2. Interpretations of the woman often connect Israel, Mary and the people of God in different ways; none is turned into an undisputed geographic identification here. Her twelve stars and the wilderness nourishment invite comparison with Israel’s story. This vision after the trumpets need not mean the child’s birth occurs after every preceding scene in ordinary calendar time.
Primary Scripture
12:1 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
12:2 She was pregnant and crying out in the pain and agony of giving birth.
12:3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven royal crowns on his heads.
12:4 His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky, hurling them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, ready to devour her child as soon as she gave birth.
12:5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to be nourished for 1,260 days.
