The river and tree of life
Revelation · Draft · BSB
Content revision: 0f32129e3bd8b8ae · No editorial review date recorded
Date: Revelation 22 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.
A river of life flows from the throne of God and the Lamb. The tree of life bears fruit for the healing of the nations, the curse is gone, and God’s servants see his face and share his light.
This continues the city vision rather than beginning a new earthly journey. River and tree images recall Eden and Ezekiel’s temple river, but here the source is the throne of God and the Lamb, with no separate temple in the city. The servants’ foreheads bear God’s name, contrasting with the beast’s coerced allegiance. The end of the curse and direct presence of God complete promises heard throughout the book. The description is not enough to identify a river or tree on today’s landscape.
Primary Scripture
22:1 Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
22:2 down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
22:3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him.
22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.
22:5 There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.
