Date: Revelation 6 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.

At the fifth seal, slain witnesses ask how long judgment will be delayed and receive white robes. At the sixth, cosmic upheaval drives people of every rank to hide from the one on the throne and the Lamb.

The witnesses ask God for justice and are told to rest while others complete their witness; they are not instructed to seek revenge themselves. The next seal describes sun, moon, stars, sky, mountains and islands in the language of a collapsing world. Kings and enslaved people alike face the question of who can stand. Chapter 7 interrupts the seal sequence with scenes of sealing and worship that should be read in relation to that question. The imagery does not provide coordinates for present-day disasters.

Primary Scripture

Revelation 6:9–17 (BSB)

6:9 And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld.

6:10 And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who dwell upon the earth and avenge our blood?”

6:11 Then each of them was given a white robe and told to rest a little while longer until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, were killed, just as they had been killed.

6:12 And I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red,

6:13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind.

6:14 The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

6:15 Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.

6:16 And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.

6:17 For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?”
