Date: c. 164 BC · Kislev rededication
After military victories, Judas and his companions cleanse the sanctuary, rebuild the altar and resume worship. First Maccabees describes an eight-day celebration and establishes an annual remembrance of the dedication, the festival known as Hanukkah.
Temple rededication is not yet political independence. The reading focuses on restored worship; later festival traditions should not be silently inserted into this account. John later places Jesus at the Feast of Dedication.
