Date: Revelation 2 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.
Christ addresses Smyrna’s suffering and poverty, calls the church rich, and urges faithfulness through coming imprisonment and death. Those who overcome are promised protection from the second death.
The speaker identifies himself as the one who died and lives again, grounding the call to courage in resurrection. The ten days of suffering are stated in the message but not converted here into a modern schedule. Its severe language about a synagogue belongs to a particular first-century conflict; it must not be turned into a description of Jewish people as a whole or a license for hostility. The text’s focus is the church’s fidelity under pressure, not instructions to retaliate.
Primary Scripture
2:8 To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the First and the Last, who died and returned to life.
2:9 I know your affliction and your poverty—though you are rich! And I am aware of the slander of those who falsely claim to be Jews, but are in fact a synagogue of Satan.
2:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will suffer tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who overcomes will not be harmed by the second death.
