Sardis: wake up and strengthen what remains

Date: Revelation 3 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.
Sardis has a reputation for life but is called dead. Christ tells the church to wake up, strengthen what remains, remember what it received and repent; a faithful few and white garments are also acknowledged.
The warning about a thief addresses complacency rather than supplying a date of Christ’s coming. The message does not treat every member alike: it names people who have not soiled their garments. Its promises of white clothing, the Book of Life and acknowledgment before the Father should be heard with the call to attentive obedience. Later explanations based on military episodes in Sardis’s history can be suggestive, but the passage itself does not narrate those episodes.
Primary Scripture
3:1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of the One who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive, yet you are dead.
3:2 Wake up and strengthen what remains, which is about to die; for I have found your deeds incomplete in the sight of My God.
3:3 Remember, then, what you have received and heard. Keep it and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know the hour when I will come upon you.
3:4 But you do have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and because they are worthy, they will walk with Me in white.
3:5 Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels.
3:6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
