A new heaven and a new earth

Date: Revelation 21 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.
John sees new creation and the holy city descending from God. God dwells with his people, wipes away tears and ends death and pain; the promise includes living water and a warning about the second death.
The city comes down from heaven rather than appearing as a destination reached by a plotted ascent. The dwelling promise and removal of grief draw together earlier covenant and prophetic language. The invitation to the thirsty and the warning in verse 8 are both part of this reading, not competing endings from which to select only one. Christians interpret the renewal’s physical details differently; the atlas does not redraw coastlines from the statement that the sea is no more or date when this vision is fulfilled.
Primary Scripture
21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
21:2 I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.
21:4 ‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
21:5 And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”
21:6 And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life.
21:7 The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.
21:8 But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

Isaiah’s new heavens and new earth and an end to weeping provide a major prophetic connection.
The covenant promise of God dwelling among his people helps illuminate the announcement from the throne.
Reformed / PCA teaching perspective
Editorial teaching note · Draft for pastoral review · Not an official PCA publication
Christian hope includes bodily resurrection and everlasting life in God’s presence. God’s saving purpose reaches its completion in Christ; the new creation invites worship and endurance rather than withdrawal from love of neighbor.
Confessional basis
Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF), subordinate to Scripture.
Read with this lesson
Paul joins creation’s liberation with the redemption of believers’ bodies.
Interpretive distinction
The confession’s resurrection hope does not settle every physical detail of the visionary city or authorize plotting its dimensions on a current map.
Discuss
How does hope for renewed creation encourage faithful service in the present?
Location evidence
Visionary setting; no geographic pin or route. The background map shows the historical recipients in western Asia Minor, not the location of this vision.
No event map marker is assigned. Do not infer an exact venue from related places.
For the class
Which relationships and losses are transformed by the promise that God will dwell with his people?
Interpretation and reuse
Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
