Date: Revelation 2 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.

The church at Ephesus is praised for endurance and testing false apostles, but rebuked for abandoning its first love. It is called to remember, repent and do its earlier works, with a promise of the tree of life.

The message holds discernment and love together rather than treating either as sufficient alone. Removal of the lampstand is a warning to this church, and the final call asks all the churches to listen. The passage condemns the Nicolaitans’ practices but does not explain their identity in detail. Acts’ account of Paul’s farewell to Ephesian elders is a related earlier setting, not this same occasion or proof that all the people addressed are the same.

Primary Scripture

Revelation 2:1–7 (BSB)

2:1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

2:2 I know your deeds, your labor, and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate those who are evil, and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles.

2:3 Without growing weary, you have persevered and endured many things for the sake of My name.

2:4 But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.

2:5 Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen. Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. But if you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

2:6 But you have this to your credit: You hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the tree of life in the Paradise of God.
