Date: Isaac dies aged 180 · Joseph about 29 (calculated)

Jacob comes home to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Hebron. Isaac dies at a hundred and eighty, old and full of years, and his sons Esau and Jacob bury him.

Genesis records Isaac’s death at the end of Jacob’s story (35:29), but its ages place it here: Isaac was 60 at Jacob’s birth and died at 180, when Jacob was 120. Jacob was 130 when he came to Egypt (47:9), nine years after Joseph rose to power at thirty, so Isaac died about a year before that rise, some twelve years after Joseph was sold.

Primary Scripture

Genesis 35:27–29 (BSB)

35:27 Jacob returned to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

35:28 And Isaac lived 180 years.

35:29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
