Date: Ministry in Galilee. A guided comparison of Gospel accounts, not a measured calendar or a claim that every parallel follows the same sequence.

Approaching Nain, Jesus meets a funeral procession for a widow’s only son. Moved by compassion, he tells the young man to rise and gives him back to his mother; the crowd praises God.

The widow does not first request the miracle. Luke’s wording recalls earlier prophetic restorations of children to their mothers, and the crowd responds by calling Jesus a great prophet.

## Primary Scripture

[Luke 7:11–17 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%207%3A11%E2%80%9317&version=BSB)

7:11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.

7:12 As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.

7:13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”

7:14 Then He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!”

7:15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.

7:16 A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”

7:17 And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.

## For the class

What does Luke emphasize about Jesus’s response before anyone asks him to act?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
