Date: Cyrus through Darius · Temple work resumes in Darius’s second year

People who claim to worship the same God offer to help build, but the returnee leaders refuse their participation. Opposition then brings discouragement, fear and hired interference. The temple work remains at a standstill until the second year of Darius.

Ezra 4:6–23 jumps forward to later opposition under Xerxes and Artaxerxes before verse 24 returns to the earlier temple story. Those later verses have separate places on this timeline. The refusal and subsequent hostility should be read in the narrator’s setting without turning every neighboring person into a timeless enemy.

## Primary Scripture

[Ezra 4:1–5 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezra%204%3A1%E2%80%935&version=BSB)

4:1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,

4:2 they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”

4:3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”

4:4 Then the people of the land set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to build.

4:5 They hired counselors against them to frustrate their plans throughout the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.

[Ezra 4:24 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezra%204%3A24&version=BSB)

4:24 Thus the construction of the house of God in Jerusalem ceased, and it remained at a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

How does separating the later correspondence change the way we read the interruption of temple work?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
