Date: Judea, Perea and the road to Jerusalem. A guided comparison of Gospel accounts, not a measured calendar or a claim that every parallel follows the same sequence.

As Jesus sets his face toward Jerusalem, a Samaritan village refuses hospitality. James and John propose calling down fire, but Jesus rebukes them and they continue to another village.

Luke identifies the refusal with Jesus’s destination, not an inability of all Samaritans to respond. The next chapter’s Samaritan neighbor and the later grateful Samaritan prevent making this village stand for an entire people.

## Primary Scripture

[Luke 9:51–56 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%209%3A51%E2%80%9356&version=BSB)

9:51 As the day of His ascension approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

9:52 He sent messengers on ahead, who went into a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.

9:53 But the people there refused to welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.

9:54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”

9:55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

9:56 And He and His disciples went on to another village.

## Location evidence

Luke names a Samaritan village but not its name or coordinates. The region is approximate and does not locate an exact rejection site.

## For the class

How does Jesus respond to the disciples’ desire to punish rejection?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
