Date: Revelation 16 · reading sequence. This is the order of the book. It does not assign a calendar date to a vision or choose one scheme of fulfillment.

Darkness falls on the beast’s kingdom, the Euphrates dries, and deceptive spirits gather kings to Armageddon. A call to stay awake interrupts the scene before the seventh bowl brings upheaval and judgment on Babylon.

The gathering is driven by demonic deception, and the inserted blessing calls the hearer to vigilance. Armageddon is often connected with Megiddo, but its meaning and role in the vision are disputed; naming it does not establish a modern battle plan. The seventh bowl describes collapsing cities, fleeing islands, disappearing mountains and immense hail. These are not changes that can responsibly be animated as a known historical map. The vision still ends with people cursing God rather than repenting.

## Primary Scripture

[Revelation 16:10–21 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation%2016%3A10%E2%80%9321&version=BSB)

16:10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and men began to gnaw their tongues in anguish

16:11 and curse the God of heaven for their pains and sores. Yet they did not repent of their deeds.

16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East.

16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs coming out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.

16:14 These are demonic spirits that perform signs and go out to all the kings of the earth, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.

16:15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who remains awake and clothed, so that he will not go naked and let his shame be exposed.”

16:16 And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

16:17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came from the throne in the temple, saying, “It is done!”

16:18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake the likes of which had not occurred since men were upon the earth—so mighty was the great quake.

16:19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. And God remembered Babylon the great and gave her the cup of the wine of the fury of His wrath.

16:20 Then every island fled, and no mountain could be found.

16:21 And great hailstones weighing almost a hundred pounds each rained down on them from above. And men cursed God for the plague of hail, because it was so horrendous.

## Related Scripture

These readings illuminate biblical language and themes. Connections do not by themselves settle the timing or every interpretation of the vision.

[Zechariah 14:1–9 · teaching](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Zechariah%2014%3A1%E2%80%939&version=BSB)

Zechariah supplies a related prophetic scene of nations gathered, upheaval and the LORD’s kingship; comparison does not settle the visions’ geographic fulfillment.

## Location evidence

Armageddon and the Euphrates are names within the vision. No battlefield, river-crossing route or present-day nation is plotted. The background remains the historical recipient region.

No event map marker is assigned. Do not infer an exact venue from related places.

## For the class

Why might the call to stay awake matter more for the hearers than locating the assembled armies?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
