Date: Judea, Perea and the road to Jerusalem. A guided comparison of Gospel accounts, not a measured calendar or a claim that every parallel follows the same sequence.

In a synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus calls forward a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years and restores her. He answers the leader’s objection by comparing release from bondage with untying an animal for water.

Jesus calls her a daughter of Abraham and treats release as fitting for the Sabbath. Luke contrasts the opponents’ response with the crowd’s joy; the woman’s disability is not described as punishment for a personal sin.

## Primary Scripture

[Luke 13:10–17 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2013%3A10%E2%80%9317&version=BSB)

13:10 One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

13:11 and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was hunched over and could not stand up straight.

13:12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your disability.”

13:13 Then He placed His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God.

13:14 But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. “There are six days for work,” he told the crowd. “So come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.”

13:15 “You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it to water?

13:16 Then should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?”

13:17 When Jesus said this, all His adversaries were humiliated. And the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things He was doing.

The Sabbath command’s memory of liberation provides a close connection.

## Location evidence

Luke names a synagogue but no town. The preceding journey context cannot identify a particular building.

No event map marker is assigned. Do not infer an exact venue from related places.

## For the class

How does the image of untying help explain Jesus’s view of Sabbath restoration?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
