Date: c. 67–63 BC · Dynastic conflict

Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II struggle for power after Queen Alexandra’s death. Rival appeals draw outside powers into the conflict.

Hyrcanus II is distinct from the earlier John Hyrcanus. Internal conflict helps explain the approach to Roman intervention, without making that intervention inevitable or welcome to every community.

## For the class

How can a succession dispute change a community’s relationship with neighboring powers?

## Interpretation and reuse

Narrative order is a reading arrangement, not a proven chronology. Dates retain their stated uncertainty. An identified locality does not establish the exact venue or prove an event. Region extents and routes are illustrative, not surveyed boundaries or ancient roads. Draft material has not completed editorial review.
