Date: Ministry in Galilee. A guided comparison of Gospel accounts, not a measured calendar or a claim that every parallel follows the same sequence.

On his return, Jesus responds to a synagogue leader’s appeal, heals a woman with longstanding bleeding, and raises the leader’s daughter. Matthew’s linked section continues with two blind men and a man unable to speak.

Mark and Luke name Jairus and report news of the girl’s death during the journey; Matthew condenses the account with the father reporting her death at the outset. The complete Luke reading now includes the girl’s restoration.

## Primary Scripture

[Matthew 9:18–34 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%209%3A18%E2%80%9334&version=BSB)

9:18 While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came and knelt before Him. “My daughter has just died,” he said. “But come and place Your hand on her, and she will live.”

9:19 So Jesus got up and went with him, along with His disciples.

9:20 Suddenly a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak.

9:21 She said to herself, “If only I touch His cloak, I will be healed.”

9:22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that very hour.

9:23 When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader, He saw the flute players and the noisy crowd.

9:24 “Go away,” He told them. “The girl is not dead, but asleep.” And they laughed at Him.

9:25 After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.

9:26 And the news about this spread throughout that region.

9:27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

9:28 After Jesus had entered the house, the blind men came to Him. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” He asked. “Yes, Lord,” they answered.

9:29 Then He touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you.”

9:30 And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one finds out about this!”

9:31 But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout the land.

9:32 As they were leaving, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to Jesus.

9:33 And when the demon had been driven out, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

9:34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that He drives out demons.”

[Mark 5:21–43 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%205%3A21%E2%80%9343&version=BSB)

5:21 When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.

5:22 A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet

5:23 and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”

5:24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.

5:25 And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.

5:26 She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.

5:27 When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.

5:28 For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”

5:29 Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

5:30 At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”

5:31 His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’”

5:32 But He kept looking around to see who had done this.

5:33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.

5:34 “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”

5:35 While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”

5:36 But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”

5:37 And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

5:38 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.

5:39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”

5:40 And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.

5:41 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”

5:42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). And at once they were utterly astounded.

5:43 Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.

[Luke 8:40–56 (BSB)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%208%3A40%E2%80%9356&version=BSB)

8:40 When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.

8:41 Just then a synagogue leader named Jairus came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Him to come to his house,

8:42 because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,

8:43 including a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one was able to heal her.

8:44 She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

8:45 “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it. “Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”

8:46 But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”

8:47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.

8:48 “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

8:49 While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”

8:50 But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

8:51 When He entered the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.

8:52 Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her. But Jesus said, “Stop weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”

8:53 And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.

8:54 But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”

8:55 Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.

8:56 Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
